Reliability Centered Maintenance
ART provides world-class facilitation and analysis support to a facility’s reliability-centered maintenance effort and assists clients through all phases of an RCM study, including:
- Specification of specific facility performance objectives
- Division of the system into the major functions (sub-systems)
- Completion of a thorough and well-documented Failure Modes and Effects Analysis for all equipment in the system
- Designation of critical equipment and Optional Risk Ranking
- Selection of tasks
- Implementation of the resulting proactive maintenance package
- Continuous improvement assistance via Living Program reviews
The ART process is shown below.

The ART RCM process utilizes the participation of client personnel with real world experience with the equipment in the facility. A unit operator will be knowledgeable of the specific operating goals of the unit, how the system should be divided into functions, and specific failure modes for each piece of equipment with their associated failure effects (i.e. how does the piece of equipment fail and what is the consequence).
The RCM approach takes credit for operator intervention to respond to an equipment failure and mitigate the failure effects. The operator will know how the failure will become evident and what mitigating actions the operators can be reasonably expected to take. This information is vital in determining the criticality of a piece of equipment.
Task selection is achieved through a team approach that includes the operator and the associated maintenance technician and other subject matter experts for each equipment type. Task selection involves the use of task hierarchies designed to favor condition monitoring and predictive maintenance tasks over time-based preventive maintenance tasks. All critical and non-critical equipment is evaluated for value-added cost-effective tasks. Once task selection is complete for all pieces of equipment in the system being analyzed, the facility will have a complete proactive maintenance program.
ART can assist the client in the implementation of this proactive maintenance program by comparing the RCM-recommended tasks with the existing proactive maintenance tasks and making the necessary changes in the client CMMS, the field data collection system, and other systems that manage proactive maintenance activities.
ART can also assist the client with periodic reviews necessary to keep the proactive maintenance program evergreen.
ART has developed this proprietary process based on the original RCM process developed for the airline industry in the 1960s and 1970s. The ART approach allows for a significant resource savings compared to the original RCM process (MSG-1) and the “classical RCM” process developed for the power and process industries. The results provided by ART are comparable to the results from the other processes, but require less investment from the client (i.e. less time for client personnel involvement and less overall cost to complete the analysis). The ART process is in compliance with the SAE JA1011 specification of evaluation criteria for RCM processes.
ART has unparalleled RCM experience in many industries including Oil & Gas Exploration and Production, Refining, Petrochemical, Pharmaceutical, Facilities and Electric Power. ART is the recognized leader of providing RCM services to the production, refining, and chemical branches of the oil industry.
ART has developed a software program ReliaBuilder RCM to manage the RCM data, including the FMEA and proactive maintenance program. See the ReliaBuilder RCM page for more information on this product.
